R290 vs. R600a Refrigerant: What's in Your Cooler (and Why)
Open any modern commercial cooler's spec sheet and you'll see a refrigerant code like R290 or R600a. These aren't arbitrary letters — they're natural refrigerants replacing the older HFCs, and they're a big part of why today's units run cheaper and cleaner. Here's what the difference means to you.
Both are natural hydrocarbons
R290 (propane) and R600a (isobutane) both come from the same family of natural hydrocarbon refrigerants. They replaced synthetic refrigerants like R134a and R404a because they have a tiny global-warming impact — a GWP of 3 or less, versus over 1,400 for the old gases — while cooling more efficiently. In short: better cooling per watt, and far kinder to the climate.
How they differ
- R290 (propane) runs at lower temperatures with excellent heat transfer, which makes it the refrigerant of choice for freezers and colder cabinets. KOOLOTS freezers use R290 to hold -8°F to -13°F efficiently.
- R600a (isobutane) is optimized for the moderate temperatures of refrigerators and coolers. KOOLOTS refrigerators use R600a to hold their 28–50°F range quietly and efficiently.
Neither is "better" in the abstract — each is matched to the temperature band it has to hold. (Temperature bands: freezer and refrigerator.)
Why you'll see these codes more and more
Regulations have been phasing down high-GWP refrigerants for years, and the DOE efficiency standards keep tightening. Natural refrigerants are how manufacturers hit both at once: lower energy draw and near-zero climate impact. For a buyer, that shows up as a lower electric bill and a unit that's future-proofed against refrigerant bans.
What about safety?
Hydrocarbons are flammable, which is why modern units are built to strict safety standards — sealed systems, engineered charge limits, and ETL Listed construction that covers the electrical and refrigerant safety. In practice, the refrigerant charge in a residential or small commercial unit is tiny (a few ounces), and the system is sealed for life. When you see ETL Listed on the label, that's the certification that says the refrigerant and electrical design met the standard.
Your takeaway
- ✓ R290 = freezer and deep-cold duty
- ✓ R600a = refrigerator and cooler duty
- ✓ Both = lower energy bills and near-zero climate impact
- ✓ Look for ETL Listed to confirm the system is built to safety standards
