Commercial Freezer Frosting Up? How to Fix Ice Buildup
A little frost is normal. A freezer that grows real ice — on the back wall, under the baskets, around the door seal — has a problem, because ice is insulation: the thicker it gets, the harder the freezer works and the worse it cools. Here are the four causes of ice buildup, in order of likelihood, and how to fix each one.
1. The door seal — or the door habits
Warm, humid air leaking in is the most common source of frost, and the usual culprit is the gasket: torn, hardened, or failing the dollar-bill test. A door left ajar (or propped open during a restock) does the same thing in minutes. Check the gasket first — here's how to test and replace it — and close the door like the box depends on it. 2. Blocked airflow
An overloaded freezer has no circulation. Product pressed against the back wall, boxes stacked against the fan, or a fully packed door pocket all create the same result: moisture in the trapped air freezes onto surfaces instead of being carried through the defrost cycle. 3. A clogged defrost drain
When the freezer runs its defrost cycle, the melted frost has to go somewhere — a drain line under the back wall carries it to the pan. When that line clogs, the water refreezes: ice forms at the floor of the cabinet, under the baskets, sometimes leaking onto the kitchen floor instead. The fix:
- Empty and unplug the freezer.
- Find the drain hole — bottom center of the interior, at the base of the back wall, often behind a small cover.
- Once the unit has defrosted, flush the drain with warm water (a turkey baster works well) until it runs through to the pan underneath.
- If it's still slow, a flexible pipe cleaner or soft wire can clear the line — gently, and never with anything sharp.
- Clean the drain pan while you're there, dry everything, restart, and confirm the pan collects water on the next defrost cycle.

4. Failed defrost components
If the ice returns within days after a full defrost — with the door sealing properly — the defrost system itself has failed: a burned-out defrost heater, a failed defrost thermostat, or a faulty timer/control board. This is a technician's job; the parts are model-specific and the diagnosis is electrical.
How to defrost safely
- Unplug, empty, and move product to another box.
- Towels on the floor; leave the door open; bowls of warm (not boiling) water inside speed things up.
- Never chip ice with a knife, screwdriver, or anything sharp. One puncture of an interior wall or a refrigerant line turns a defrost job into a dead freezer.
- Dry the interior completely before restarting, and let the box reach 0°F before reloading.
Prevention
Monthly: check the gasket, check for frost buildup, and confirm the drain line is clear — all on the maintenance schedule. The freezers that run clean for a decade are the ones where a small frost patch gets dealt with before it becomes a glacier.
The bottom line
