Commercial Refrigerator Evaporator Fan Not Working: Diagnosis & Replacement
Your commercial refrigerator has two fans, and most people only ever think about one. The condenser fan (on the outside) cools the machinery. The evaporator fan (on the inside) is the one that actually moves cold air around the food. When the evaporator fan dies, the compressor can be running perfectly while the box slowly warms — a confusing failure that wastes days of diagnosis. Here's how to confirm it's the fan, what causes it, and what to do.
The symptoms
- The compressor runs constantly but the box won't hold temperature.
- No air moving at the interior vents, with the door closed.
- A squealing, grinding, or rattling noise from inside the cabinet.
- Uneven temperatures — cold spots near the back, warm air up front.
- Frost or ice forming around the fan guard.
Confirming the fan is the problem
The evaporator fan is wired to the door switch: it stops when the door opens, so you can't just open the door and look. The test: with the door open, press the door switch by hand (the small plunger in the door frame) and watch and listen. If the fan doesn't spin — or spins slowly, noisily, or only when nudged — you've found your problem. Keep fingers clear of the blades.
The three causes, in order of likelihood
1. Ice blocking the blades (cheapest fix)

2. A failed fan motor

3. A faulty door switch or wiring
If the fan never runs even when the switch is pressed, the switch itself (or the wiring to it) may be the culprit — the fan never receives the "door is closed" signal. This is electrical diagnosis: technician territory.
Replacing the fan motor, step by step
- Order the exact motor for your model number — fan motors are model-specific in size, speed, and wiring.
- Unplug the unit and empty the shelf area around the fan.
- Remove the fan guard or interior cover (usually clips or a few screws).
- Photograph the wiring, then disconnect the old motor.
- Mount the new motor in the same orientation, connect the wires one at a time, and replace the guard.
- Plug in, press the door switch, and confirm the fan runs quietly and moves air.

Why a dead fan is a "fix it now" problem
Without the evaporator fan, cold air never reaches the product — but the thermostat keeps calling for cooling, so the compressor runs nonstop, the evaporator ices over, and the compressor works itself toward an early death.
