Commercial Refrigerator Compressor Humming but Not Running: What It Means
You plug the refrigerator in, the breaker's fine, but instead of the normal low thrum, the compressor just hums — a steady electrical buzz with no start, sometimes followed by a click and silence. That hum is meaningful: it means power is reaching the compressor, and the motor can't start. Usually that's one of three problems. Two of them are cheap parts. One of them is not. Here's how to tell the difference — and what to do before you spend money.
Safety and the 5-minute checks first
- Unplug the unit before doing anything hands-on. If the breaker has tripped more than once, leave it unplugged and call an electrician or technician — that's a wiring issue, not a compressor issue.
- Is the outlet live? Test it with another device.
- Was the thermostat bumped? Set to off or too high, it won't call for cooling — but that usually means no hum at all.
- Clean the condenser coil. This is the big one. A clogged coil makes the compressor run hot, which trips its thermal overload protector — the motor hums, can't start, and clicks off. Clean the coil (step-by-step here), let the compressor cool for 30–60 minutes, then try again. A surprising number of "dead compressors" just needed this.
- Recent power outage? Voltage dips during storms and heat waves can trip the overload protector the same way. Same fix: cool down, retry.
The three real causes
1. A failed start relay (most common)
Single-phase compressor motors can't start themselves — a start relay kicks in briefly to get the motor turning, then drops out. When it fails, the compressor hums but never starts. The part itself is inexpensive; the labor to diagnose and replace it is the bulk of the bill.
2. A failed capacitor
The start (or run) capacitor provides the electrical kick the motor needs. A failing capacitor often gives visible warning: a swollen, bulging, or leaking case. Like the relay, it's a cheap part and a standard repair.
3. A seized or failed compressor (the expensive one)
If the motor hums, gets hot, and clicks off on the overload protector even with a good relay and capacitor, the compressor itself is likely the problem — internally worn or seized. What a technician will do
- Test the relay and capacitor with a multimeter and replace the failed part — usually a same-visit fix.
- Check the compressor windings for the resistance readings that separate "won't start" from "is dead."
- Possibly fit a hard-start kit — an extra capacitor-and-relay assembly that gives an aging compressor the extra kick to start. Honest framing: a hard-start kit treats the symptom and buys time; it doesn't fix a dying compressor.
What you should not DIY
Relay and capacitor diagnosis is parts-level electrical work — fine for a technician, not for improvisation. Anything involving the sealed refrigerant system requires an EPA-certified technician by law. If the problem is the compressor itself, the decision is a money question:
- A relay or capacitor service call typically runs in the low hundreds.
- A compressor replacement — parts plus labor — can approach half the price of a new unit or more, especially out of warranty.

How to prevent ever hearing the hum
Compressors don't die young for no reason. The two killers are heat and dirt: a clogged condenser coil and a blocked vent make the compressor run hotter than it was designed to, day after day. The monthly coil cleaning on the maintenance schedule is the cheapest compressor insurance that exists.
