Convenience Store Beverage Merchandising: How to Sell More Cold Drinks
Cold beverages are the highest-margin, fastest-turning category in most convenience stores — and the moment a customer reaches for one is decided in seconds, at the cooler. Good merchandising isn't luck; it's placement, temperature, and a cooler that works. Here's the playbook.
Place the cooler where the decision happens
The cold-drink cooler should sit on the natural path to checkout, not tucked in a corner. Customers grab a cold drink after they've decided they're thirsty, which usually happens a few steps before they pay. Put the cooler:
- Near the register, so the grab is effortless on the way out.
- At the end of an aisle, visible from the store entrance.
- Directly in the impulse zone — the first and last thing customers see.
Keep it cold — and keep it full
A half-empty cooler signals "picked over" and kills impulse. Two rules that move product:
- Face everything forward — every can's label points out, so the shelf reads as fully stocked.
- Hold 33–50°F — cold enough to taste right, and the condensation on the can is itself a sales cue. KOOLOTS beverage coolers hold this range with fan-forced cooling, so the can at the back is as cold as the one in front.
Merchandise by demand, not by category alone
Put your fastest sellers at eye level (roughly 3–5 feet) and premium or impulse items there too. Energy drinks and sodas lead; water goes lower; your high-margin extras (flavored waters, cold coffee) get the prime middle shelf. Re-order by what actually sells each week, not by a fixed planogram.
Lighting and glass sell the cold
A full-view glass door and bright interior LED lighting are what make a drink look cold and premium from across the store. LED runs cool, so it won't fight the refrigeration, and it makes the condensation and color pop. If your current cooler has dim, yellowed lighting, replacing the unit can lift category sales on its own.
Right-size the cooler to your volume
- Small store / high turnover — a KSC-248 (8.5 cu.ft) or KSC-280A (10.8 cu.ft).
- High-volume store — a KSC-370A (13.5 cu.ft) that holds a full day's peak.
Your merchandising checklist
- ✓ Cooler on the path to checkout, visible from the door
- ✓ 33–50°F, fan-forced for even temperature
- ✓ Facings forward, fast sellers at eye level
- ✓ Full-view glass door + bright LED lighting
- ✓ Sized for your busiest day
